class=\"kb-resolution-section section ng-scope\"><span class=\"text-base\">Important <\/span>Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is a mandatory part of Windows Vista and later versions of Windows. We do not recommend that you disable IPv6 or its components. If you do, some Windows components may not function. Additionally, system startup will be delayed for 5 seconds if IPv6 is disabled by incorrectly, setting the&nbsp;<span class=\"text-base\">DisabledComponents<\/span> registry setting to a value of <span class=\"text-base\">0xfffffff<\/span>. The correct value should be <span class=\"text-base\">0xff<\/span>. The <strong class=\"uiterm\">DisabledComponents<\/strong> registry value affects all network interfaces on the host.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-base\">Important<\/span> Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, <a id=\"kb-link-3\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/322756\">back up the registry for restoration <\/a>in case problems occur.<\/p>\n<p>To disable certain IPv6 components, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"sbody-num_list\">\n<li>Click <strong class=\"uiterm\">Start<\/strong>, type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">regedit <\/span>in the <strong class=\"uiterm\">Start Search <\/strong>box, and then click <strong class=\"uiterm\">regedit.exe <\/strong>in the <strong class=\"uiterm\">Programs <\/strong>list.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong class=\"uiterm\">User Account Control <\/strong>dialog box, click <strong class=\"uiterm\">Continue<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:\n<div class=\"indent\">\n<div class=\"reg_path\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Tcpip6\\Parameters\\<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong class=\"uiterm\">DisabledComponents <\/strong>to change the <strong class=\"uiterm\">DisabledComponents <\/strong>entry.<span class=\"text-base\">Note <\/span>If the <strong class=\"uiterm\">DisabledComponents <\/strong>entry is unavailable, you must create it. To do this, follow these steps:\n<ol class=\"sbody-alpha_list\">\n<li>In the <strong class=\"uiterm\">Edit <\/strong>menu, point to <strong class=\"uiterm\">New<\/strong>, and then click <strong class=\"uiterm\">DWORD (32-bit) Value<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">DisabledComponents<\/span>, and then press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong class=\"uiterm\">DisabledComponents<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Type any of the following values in the <span class=\"text-base\">Value data<\/span> field to configure the IPv6 protocol to the intended state, and then click <strong class=\"uiterm\">OK<\/strong>:\n<ol class=\"sbody-alpha_list\">\n<li>Type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">0 <\/span>to re-enable all IPv6 components (Windows default setting).<\/li>\n<li>Type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">0xff <\/span>to disable all IPv6 components except the IPv6 loopback interface. This value also configures Windows to prefer using IPv4 over IPv6 by changing entries in the prefix policy table. For more information, see <a id=\"kb-link-4\" href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/library\/bb877985.aspx\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Source and destination address selection<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">0x20 <\/span>to prefer IPv4 over IPv6 by changing entries in the prefix policy table.<\/li>\n<li>Type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">0x10 <\/span>to disable IPv6 on all nontunnel interfaces (both LAN and Point-to-Point Protocol [PPP] interfaces).<\/li>\n<li>Type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">0x01 <\/span>to disable IPv6 on all tunnel interfaces. These include Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol (ISATAP), 6to4, and Teredo.<\/li>\n<li>Type <span class=\"sbody-userinput\">0x11 <\/span>to disable all IPv6 interfaces except for the IPv6 loopback interface.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Use the <span class=\"text-base\">DisabledComponents<\/span> registry value to verify whether IPv6 is disabled. To do this, run the following command at a Windows command prompt:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"sbody-pre\">reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Tcpip6\\Parameters \/v DisabledComponents<\/pre>\n<p>When you do this, you may receive the following error message:<\/p>\n<div class=\"sbody-error\">\n<div class=\"indent\">ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you receive this error message, the <span class=\"text-base\">DisabledComponents<\/span> registry value is not set. If the <span class=\"text-base\">DisabledComponents<\/span> value is set, it overrides the settings in the connection properties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"text-base\">Disable IPv6 on a specific network adapter<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"kb-collapsible kb-collapsible-collapsed\">\n<p>You can do this by unbinding the adapter in the <strong class=\"uiterm\">Local Area Connection Properties<\/strong> dialog box:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"sbody-num_list\">\n<li>Click <strong class=\"uiterm\"><span class=\"text-base\">Start<\/span><\/strong>, and then click <strong class=\"uiterm\">Control Panel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong class=\"uiterm\">Network and Sharing Center<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong class=\"uiterm\">View your active networks <\/strong>area, click <strong class=\"uiterm\">Local Area Connection<\/strong>, and then click <strong class=\"uiterm\">Properties<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong class=\"uiterm\"><span class=\"text-base\">Networking <\/span><\/strong>tab, clear the <strong class=\"uiterm\"><span class=\"text-base\">Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP\/IPv6) <\/span><\/strong>check box, and then click <strong class=\"uiterm\">OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"text-base\">Note <\/span>The <strong class=\"uiterm\"><span class=\"text-base\">Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP\/IPv6) <\/span><\/strong>check box affects only the specific network adapter and will unbind IPv6 from the selected network adapter. To disable IPv6 on the host, use the <strong class=\"uiterm\">DisabledComponents<\/strong> registry value. The <strong class=\"uiterm\">DisabledComponents<\/strong> registry value does not affect the state of the check box.
